MOCA Food Contact Declaration
The food grade silicone molds produced by decosil and the decosil food grade silicone products are suitable and tested for contact with food and are supplied with a Moca Declaration of Conformity according to current European and Italian regulations.
The Declaration of Conformity for MOCA (Materials and Objects in Contact with Food) is a declaration that demonstrates compliance with food safety legislation by guaranteeing the suitability and conformity of materials and objects intended to come into contact with food along the commercial supply chain.
It is regulated at European level by Regulation (EC) no. 1935/2004 and by specific national regulations, by Regulation (EC) no. 2023/2006.
What does MOCA mean?
MOCA is the acronym for "Materials and Objects intended to come into contact with food".
This regulation applies to all materials and objects which, during their normal use, are intended to come into contact with food and are intended for this purpose.
It is important to know that:
- There is no body that officially "certifies" MOCA as happens for other certifications (e.g. FDA, LFGB);
- The manufacturer or importer is responsible for issuing a MOCA Declaration of Conformity certifying that the material has been tested and complies with national and European regulations;
- The declaration must be based on laboratory tests to verify global and specific migration, as well as on good manufacturing practices (GMP - EC Regulation 2023/2006);
- The checks must be carried out and repeated over time, pursuing the objective of eliminating any possible risk for the end user.
The MOCA declaration of conformity is essential for silicone that comes into contact with food because it guarantees that the material is safe and does not release harmful substances that could migrate into food and put consumers' health at risk.
This is particularly important for silicone used in the food sector, such as:
- Food molds: for cakes, chocolate, ice, etc.
- Kitchen utensils: spatulas, ladles, brushes, etc.
- Food containers: for storage in the refrigerator or freezer.
- Seals: for containers, coffee machines, etc.
What does the Declaration of Conformity for MOCAs guarantee?
The Declaration of Conformity for MOCA guarantees that the silicone used for our molds:
- complies with EU and national regulations (EC Regulation 1935/2004, EU Regulation 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practices, Ministerial Decree 21 March 1973);
- does not release dangerous substances within the limits established by the regulations (global and specific migration);
- it was produced with safe raw materials;
- it has been produced with adequate processes and good manufacturing practices (GMP): decosil silicone molds respect adequate and safe manufacturing processes with particular attention to the correct catalysis process of the components which guarantees the reliability of the product;
- it is traceable, if necessary, an action to withdraw a specific non-compliant product from the market must be implemented;
- it resists the temperatures of use foreseen and reported on the product's instructions for use and conditions of use, without altering or releasing harmful components.
What does the MOCA Declaration contain?
- Product identification (e.g. food-grade two-component silicone, commercial name);
- Reference regulations (EC Reg. 1935/2004, EU Reg. 10/2011 for plastics, EC Reg. 2023/2006 for GMP);
- Data on the manufacturer or importer responsible for compliance;
- Results of migration tests (global and specific, conducted by accredited laboratories);
- Conditions of use (maximum temperatures, types of foods with which it can be used);
- Date and signature of the company manager.
